SABC's 2D ANIMATION LEARNERSHIP A SUCCESS!
On the 1st of April 2008, 6 young creatives joined the Portal to Learning team to embark on a 10-month learning programme in 2D animation, funded by the SABC's Industry Development unit. The first 3 months covered the fundamentals of life skills, drawing and getting to know the industry, with extensive Life Skills training. In July, the learners were introduced to the Toon Boom Studio software and thereafter they started producing their animated content for the SABC as part of the deliverables of the learnership. The learners, aged from 20 to 25, were all excited to be a part of the programme and they couldn't wait to show the world what they were made of. Hungry for adventure, they completed all 5 x +- 5 minute episodes of their show by the end of January 2009 - it took them just 5 months to do all of the production work, from Scripting to Fina Mix! Enthused by the content, the learners chose to voice the characters themselves and even the title song was recorded by one of the learners (Lelo). What an achievement, considering that some of the learners had barely used a computer before the learnership! The MAPPP-SETA was the ETQA in terms of quality assuring the learnership. The learning program ended with a VIP celebration at Monte Casino's Tuscan BBQ, where there were tears of joy and lots of excitement as guests from the SABC, MAPPP SETA and the mentors laughed all the way through the screening.
